To describe status of adult overweight and obesity in urban and suburb areas of Liaoning, we used data from China Health and Nutrition Survey, including 8119 adults: 4745 in urban areas and 3374 in suburb areas. Overweight, obesity, and abdominal obesity were defined by WHO recommended cutoff points of BMI and waist circumference. The prevalence of overweight was 30.6%, obesity 6.1% and abdominal obesity 43.0%. They increased with age in urban areas, but prevalence of overweight peaked at 40~49 yrs and obesity at 50~59 yrs in suburb areas. Prevalence of obesity and abdominal obesity varied among occupations, with highest in retired people and lowest in inexperienced labor workers, but not among different education levels and difference income groups. In conclusion, obesity distribution in Liaoning province differs from other provinces in China. Whether the causes are unique or just a function of higher income and greater economic development remains to be studied.
