Basing on the kernel density estimation, the paper introduces the relative income distribution method to measure income distribution changes.Using the data of "China Health and Nutrition Survey",the paper analyzes the characteristics of income distribution, its changing process and economic meanings.Furthermore,by decomposing the relative income density function, the paper measures the impacts of growth factors and distribution factors on the income distribution changes. The empirical results show that the changes of income distribution in China closely correspond to the economic system reform process.Economic growth is the most important factor which enhances the overall income level but also raises the polarization of income distribution.Comparing to economic growth, income distributing policies play a much weaker role on income distribution changes but can help to reduce the poverty or narrow the residents’ income gap in China.
