Applying desirable dietary pattern (DDP) to analyze the quality of the diet in urban and rural household in 1995 and 1998 was presented. The results showed that: urban people should adjust the structure of their diet, to level down the increasing trend of animal food, as a replacement, more soybean consumption should be encouraged. Rural people should increase moderate amount of animal food and oils, and increase of vegetable/fruits and overall non-staple foods could keep the diet quantitatively and qualitatively improved and balanced. Promotion of soybean consumption in the rural households was the most feasible and effective way of improving nutritional quality of the diet in the rural in the near future.
