Objective To identify the trends of energy intake among Chinese adults in 9 provinces from 1989 to 2009.Method The adults aged 18-49 years with three days 24 h dietary recall data from China Health and Nutrition Survey(1989,1991,1993,1997,2000,2004,2006 and 2009) were selected as subjects studied. The current situation and long-term trends in energy intake were analyzed through SAS software. Results The average energy intake of Chinese adults aged 18-49 years in 2009 was 10278 kJ/d(2456 kcal/d) in males and 8539 kJ/d(2040.9 kcal/d) in females.Whereas the energy intake in the adults in city, suburb, town and village was 9707.3,10022.8,9876,10632.8 kJ/d(2320,2395.5,2360.5,2541.3 kcal/d) in men and 7923.7,8120.7,8340.0,8909.0 kJ/d(1893.8,1940.9,1993.3,2129.3 kcal/d) in women respectively.Cereal was the main food source of energy intake, accounted for 57.7% of total energy intake in rural adults. The percentage of energy intake from dietary protein, fats and carbohydrate was 15.1%,31.4% and 53.5% respectively. The average percentage of energy consumption from fats in the adults in city, suburb, town and village was 36.0%,33.7%,32.1% and 29.2% respectively.A decline trend in energy intake could be seen from 1989 to 2009.The average energy intake of four area groups from high to low was village, suburb, town and city. The biggest decline was in suburb group, about 1966 kJ/d(469.9 kcal/d) from 1989 to 2009.Conclusion The energy intake of Chinese adult aged 18-49 years decreased substantially in 2009.There was significant increase in percentage of energy intake from fat due to increased consumption of animal foods and edible oil during the past 20 years.Excess fat intake could result in higher risk of dietary related chronic diseases. We have to pay more attention to economic development level and food consumption habit in revising Chinese DRIs and formulating specific dietary guideline.
