Objective: To discus the distribution of BMI and its trend in adult residents with different gender, age and living communities in Liaoning Province during 1989-2006. Methods: This paper was based on data collected in the China Health and Nutrition Survey in 1989, 1991, 1993, 2000, 2004 and 2006, and the subjects were 18-45 years old healthy men and women. Results: In the period 1989-2006, the mean BMI among adult in Liaoning province increased with the year, from (22.1±2.4) kg/m2 in 1989 to (24.0±5.2) kg/m2 in 2006; and the mean BMI for men increased from (22.1±2.1) kg/m2 to (24.6±5.1) kg/m2 and for women from (22.1±2.6) kg/m2 to (23.9±4.3) kg/m2. The growth rate of males was higher than that of females. The growth rate of BMI in adult residents aged 30 and above was higher and exceeded to 24.0 kg/m2 in 2006; the means of BMI for urban, suburban, and rural residents in 1989 were (21.8±2.4) kg/m2, (21.8±2.6) kg/m2, (22.1±2.7) kg/m2 and (21.1±2.2) kg/m2, respectively, and reached to (24.0±4.2) kg/m2, (23.9±4.0) kg/m2, (24.2±4.2) kg/m2 and (22.6±3.5) kg/m2 in 2006, respectively. The growth rate of mean BMI in urban, suburban and county population increased rapidly, while slowly in rural residents. With the increase in the level of BMI, the low body weight rate of adult residents gradually decreased and the rate of overweight and obesity had a rapidly increasing trend. In 1989, the underweight adult residents in Liaoning Province was about 6.9%, overweight and obesity rate was 10.3% and in 2006, they were 4.5% and 31.9%; during this 17 years, the rate of obesity and overweight people increased by 21.6 percentage points, which grew at 209.7%, with an average annual growth rate of 6.9%. Conclusion: The BMI of adults increased year after year and disease control should be strengthened.
