A new measurement is proposed based on the family's expenditures on the possession of durable to assess the economic level of a family. For each specific durable, a weight is given according to its median purchasing price. A total score of a family is then calculated by summing up the number of the items and the weight of each durable. An initial rank of a family is obtained. Then an adjustment is made according to the family's income. When their measurement is applied to"the China health and nutrition survey data", the results are showed close to the reality.
