Using China Health and Nutrition Survey data, this paper analyses the behavior of early retirement from the labor force in urban China since 2000.We show that an individual with higher unemployment probability is more likely to choose early retirement. One percentage point increase of the unemployment probability will induce an increase of 0.25 percentage points and 0.32 percentage points of early retirement probability of male and female respectively.Poor health is a reason for female’s early retirement, but not for male’s.For female, those with grown-up children are more likely to retire early. The paper points out that current social pension security system bears some functions of unemployment insurance.Necessary reforms should be taken to change the eligibility for pension, and to develop policies for more employment and enhance unemployment insurance.
