Using perspective data from 1993,1997 and 2000 China Health and Nutrition Survey, this paper explores the impact of socioeconomic factors on living arrangement among married women.Findings from multilevel and multivariate analysis suggest that, first, living arrangement tends to be more constant than to change in that coresidence with husbands' parents remains common, and slightly increases in the 1990s.Second,the effect of socioeconomic factors on living arrangements is mixed, but education and urbanization increase the chances of living with the wives' parents, while decrease the likelihood of living with the husbands' parents.Such findings indicate an interplay in residential patterns between culture and socioeconomic characteristics. While post-marital living arrangements seem to continue cultural tradition,it also changes with improved education and urbanization. Both indeed endow women with more choices in this regard.
