Over the past two decades, our understanding of the role of beverages in health has grown immensely. Our focus is on the sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) and their adverse effect on health. SSB consumption has grown globally very rapidly. The consumption of all forms of SSBs, be they carbonated or noncarbonated sodas, energy drinks, or flavored waters, is linked with increased weight gain across all age groups and with a large array of cardiometabolic problems, including obesity, fatty liver disease, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, and this evidence comes from meta-analyses of longitudinal cohort studies and important randomized controlled trials.URL
