Abstract

A confluence of factors based on scientific findings over the past two decades have led to a growing greater concern about the role of sugar in our diet, particularly in beverages. At the same time, there appears to be an increasing push to promote sugar in both foods and beverages globally and certainly there are large increases in consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) across the world. The role of sugar in our history and in our diet certainly is not new. Scholars such as Yudkin discussed its role decades ago and warned of its potential health effects (Yudkin, 1964, 1972). Similarly, sugar has had a long complex role in global history (Mintz 1979, 1986). However, it is more recent developments that have led to much greater attention to sugar as it has affected the risk of obesity.
