Abstract

The study of religion and youth continues to grow and improve, fostering the development of new theories and data. Research on youth and religion generally fits six themes: (1) trends in religiosity and spirituality; (2) how religious or spiritual identity develops and changes; (3) how social networks, institutions, and contexts both shape and are shaped by youth religiosity and spirituality; (4) youth agency in the development of their religious or spiritual identity; (5) the degree to which religiosity or spirituality promotes well-being and prevents risky behavior; and (6) when religion has negative consequences for youth. In this article, I discuss theories, current knowledge, data, and methods common to these themes.
