Abstract

While it is not an entirely new phenomenon, music video-the combining of music with images-became an acknowledged force on television with the launching of the Music Television (MTV) cable channel on August 1, 1981. Three years later an estimated 22.6 million people-at least one-quarter of the households with television-were receiving the 24-hour rock video signal through their cables.
