As the amount of data available to public health scientists grows, so does the challenge of distilling that data into knowledge. The statistical graphic is a powerful tool that has been used to draw inferences from data since the 1700s. At their best, statistical graphics concisely summarize and clearly communicate quantitative information and also facilitate reasoning. They call attention to the magnitude and direction of quantitative relationships and encourage comparisons at multiple levels of detail. Today, the ever-increasing scope, scale, and frequency of data collection present opportunities for the development of new approaches to the design of statistical graphics.URL
