More than four decades of research across disciplines documents robust associations between social relationships and a host of cardiovascular outcomes. In this chapter, we provide a comprehensive overview of scientific evidence to date linking social relationships to heart health and cardiovascular disease risk across the life course. We further describe the biological, behavioral, and psychoemotional mechanisms linking social relationships and cardiovascular health across the human life span. This chapter closes by highlighting the critical gaps in the extant understanding of the link of social relationships to cardiovascular health and offering recommendations for areas of future research. Given well-documented associations between social relationships and heart health, it is essential that scholars, researchers, and practitioners across disciplines consider how social ties and corresponding levels of social support and strain impact population-level cardiovascular disease disparities, from birth through old age.URL
