Abstract

I listened to the podcast above on the virtues of kindness and generosity and on hearing that quote immediately thought of British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The response I quote was prompted by a question from a graduate student who lamented that she found much of her professional thought and action antithetical to kindness and generosity and perceived she was being trained as an ‘academic sniper’ to target the weaknesses in any case she had articulated to her. The professors and renowned ethicists quickly disagreed and said there was ample opportunity within academia to display those virtues and gave the quote above as a practical example. I have seen my colleagues at BJOG do much the same in investing time and effort into helping and coaching authors through multiple revisions to get their hard earned data and conclusions into publishable form and appear in press. Even our ‘reject without review’ decisions have underlying kindness, although I must confess they sting me even at career's end to see in my in box. They are kind in that they give a quick decision not wasting the author's time and help preserve the availibilty and energy of peer reviewers, who are becoming harder to find and engage.
