Abstract

Precarious work has emerged as a key challenge for workers, their families, and societies in the twenty-first century. This term denotes work that is uncertain, unstable, and insecure. Most importantly, it shifts the risks of work from employers and governments to individuals and their families, and so precarious workers typically have only limited social and legal protections. These risks have been exposed dramatically during the Covid-19 pandemic in the case of temporary and gig workers, many of whom provide essential services despite experiencing financial insecurity and being exposed to dangerous conditions. The realization that precarious work is central to addressing a myriad of social and economic problems—such as health, poverty and inequality, family formation, social integration, and individual well-being—has put this age-old topic on the front burner for social scientists and policymakers around the world.
