Abstract

Debate about physician workforce often focuses on the adequacy of current and future supply of physicians. What does an adequate physician supply mean? To date, physicians workforce planning has mostly relied on projections of future health care demands to determine the needed supply of physicians. Only recently have researchers begun to examine the relationship between physician supply and the health status of populations. A number of studies suggest that a greater supply of primary care physicians improves health outcomes. However, evidence remains modest on how to determine an adequate supply of physicians to best enhance the health outcome of a population.
