Abstract

During my residency in the 1980s there was a midnight ritual that occurred every call night. The second shift at the neighboring textIle mills would end and the women carpool to the emergency department to get their fungal vulvovaginal infections diagnosed and treated. Unlike practice now, antifungals are not available over the counter and there were no emergency medicine clinicians to care for these patients. Using pre-printed prescriptions provided by pharmaceutical company, I prescribed azole antifungals to multiple women each night. I do not know who was more pleased when antifungals were made available direct to consumers- the suffering women or me?
