For centuries, island ecosystems have inspired science and society. As the focus of Darwin's theory of evolution in the Galapagos Islands as well as the motivation for advancing our understanding of island biogeography, island ecosystems have shaped human thought and motivated political action to conserve fragile and highly valued island settings. Economic development has also transformed island ecosystems increases as more people seek to visit and experience these "special" places, thereby motivating human migration to islands for jobs in the tourism industry, industrial sector, and commercial enterprises that involve local, national, and global capital and urban infrastructure to support the needs of residents and tourists, often generating negative feedbacks to the environment through intensity of use and degradation.Reference Type
