Ecologist and pioneer environmentalist Paul Shepart (1969) detailed the complex, and continuing debt humanity owes to animals for the roles they have played in the development of our abilities to hunt, our diets, our kinship and mythologies, our costumes and material culture, our esthetics and rituals, and more. One of Shepard's central themes was that this coevolution is put at risk as wild nature disappears. He warns about a world with an excessively dominant human population and insists that we study interdependencies of society and nature without acquiescing to our tendency to hubris."Reference Type
