Abstract
Economic issues of fortification that are addressed by economists include the role industry and government should play, the question of compulsory or voluntary fortification, the nature of the economic costs and benefits of food fortification, and the level of public investment justified for implementation and quality assurance. Emphasis is placed on knowledge about the costs and benefits of fortification. Essentially, the literature shows that micronutrient fortification is one of the most cost-effective health interventions and represents a very efficient use of public resoures.
