Abstract

A code of ethics clarifies the values of a profession, promotes ethical behavior, enables public accountability, and aids in the identification, discussion, and resolution of ethical issues. The U.S. Public Health Code of Ethics, adopted in 2002, is distinctive in that it prescribes ethical interactions between an agency, such as a health department, and the population it serves. Codes of ethics for health educators, epidemiologists, and health service administrators address the actions of individual professionals, yet they are still consistent with the principles in the Public Health Code of Ethics.
