Women's health is probably one of the most inadequately researched areas in international public health. A major flaw in past efforts has been an almost exclusive focus on women as mothers and child-care givers (Merchant 1989, Winikoff 1988, McGuire 1989), rather than on women themselves as a target population of interest. In the South Asian context, except for the well-known Bang and Bang (1989) study, few studies have provided estimates of women's morbidity unrelated to pregnancy and child birth.Reference Type
