Abstract
I have long been a proponent of being in the best physical, nutrition, emotional health and wellbeing prior to pregnancy to optimise birth outcome. This is important for the first, as well as subsequent pregnancies. The literature supports this stance with evidence showing lower risks of birth defects with supplementation of folic acid on the perio-conceptional period, improved outcomes for diabetic women when they are in good glucose control prior to becoming pregnant, better outcomes with prepregnancy smoking cessation, and enhanced fecundity with preconception weight loss among women with polycystic ovary syndrome.
