Summary

The Malawi Social Cash Transfer Programme (SCTP) is a government program in Malawi administered by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Welfare. Cash payments are given to poor households. While the effect of these payments have been studied in areas such as income, nutrition, and education, little is known about their effect on intimate partner violence (IPV) within beneficiary households. This research will 1) examine the impact of the Malawi SCTP on exposure to IPV among young adults who are not the primary beneficiaries of the program (such as the children of beneficiaries), and 2) understand the pathways through which the cash transfer affects the choice and patterns of intimate partnerships, and thus the exposure to interpersonal violence.
