A new report from CPC’s Carolina Demography examines population trends to predict likely shifts in the nation’s political geography.

Every decade, following the decennial Census, the 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives are allocated to the 50 states on the basis of their population. After the 2020 Census, multiple Southern and Western states (including North Carolina) are likely to gain representation, while many Northeastern and Midwestern states will lose a representative.
